View and Download 3D Models in the Documents Tool

Background

Generally, most contractors of a company do not have the ability to view 3D models (such as Autodesk® Revit® files) because of not having access to the necessary application. With the model viewer in the Documents tool, all project users can quickly access and view 3D models directly in Procore.

Things to Consider

  • Required User Permissions:

  • Additional Information:

    • Important Information About 3D Model Viewing & Procore BIM Show/Hide Details

You do not need Procore BIM to view 3D models in the Document Management or the Project Documents tool. Any user with permissions to 3D model files can view and download them. This capability is not available in the Company Documents tool.

      Tip

Procore BIM Advantage: Accounts with Procore BIM and the Document Management tool benefit from automatic model processing, which significantly reduces wait times.

      Compatibility & Limitations

      • Platform: Currently available on the Web application only (Mobile support is not yet available).

      • Visibility: The viewer renders the entire model. Hidden items or section boxes from the original software will not be respected.

      • Autodesk® Revit®: Imports the Default 3D view (labeled {3D} in the Revit® Project Browser). If this view is missing, Procore will create it automatically.

      • Autodesk® Navisworks®: Imports the latest saved view as the default.

      Supported File Types

Procore typically supports new file type versions within 6 months of their release. Additional file types will be added in future updates.

Prerequisites

Steps

  1. Navigate to the project's Documents tool.

  2. Locate the 3D model file that you want to view.
    Note:

    • Files that are currently processing have a spinning icon. The processing time depends on the size of the model.

    • Files that have finished processing have a green checkmark Icon Green Checkmark icon next to them.

    • If the file has not been processed yet, click the file and select Process File. 3D model files are automatically processed for Procore accounts with the BIM product.

  3. Click the file to to open the model in the viewer.
Note: This opens the model in a new tab. If this is your first time opening the file (or if you have cleared the cache on your browser or are using a different browser or computer), the model will need to download before you can view it.

  4. With the model open, you can use several tools to navigate and examine the model.
Note: The model viewer within the Documents tool is based off the viewer in the Models tool, but currently does NOT have the following functions: 2D Drawing Views feature, Active Collaborator feature, and the Coordination Issues View side panel.
