Background

The more instructions we put in our agents the more there is to maintain and standardize across teams. Skills solve this by moving some of that knowledge out of individual agents and into a shared library. Instead of writing the same step-by-step guidance into every agent that needs it, you write it once as a skill, and any agent can use it. A skill is a reusable set of instructions that helps an agent complete a specific job the same way every time.

Ways to use skills:

  • Let the AI do the work: When you chat with the AI, the agent automatically chooses from skills available to you.

  • Force: Type a slash key to force the AI to use a particular skill (example: /rfi-management).

  • Attach to agent: Pin skills on an agent in the Planning Strategy section of the agent's configuration panel, if you want that agent to always use them.

Skill types:

  • Built-in skills are written and maintained by Procore. Their content is read-only and nobody, including admins, can edit it in place, though it can be cloned and edited as a private skill from there. Admin can disable and hide built-in skills, as needed.

  • Custom skills are created by someone at your company, either from scratch or by cloning a built-in. These new and cloned skills always start as private skills, visible only by its author and only usable by their own agent conversations. That skill’s author can edit it freely.

Things to Consider

  • Availability:

    • The skills library is in Datagrid, but not yet in the Procore AI. However, Procore AI and the agents within it can use all the same skills that are available to that user in Datagrid. While in Procore AI, the user can also reference a specific skill directly using its slash key, such as /rfi-management.

    • All account types can reach out to their Procore point of contact to get the skills feature turned on.

  • Permissions:

    • Anyone can create, edit, and delete a private skill.

    • Admins can share their own private skills with the company and remove/restore built-in skills for the company.

  • Automatic updates: Updating a shared custom skill, or restoring a built-in to its default, updates the behavior of every agent that references the skill (across both products if they are a Procore AI customer). This means admin should take care when making changes to shared skills, and it also means there is no need to update each agent individually. The next time an agent runs, it will use the current version of the skill, as needed.

Steps

  1. Log in to Datagrid.

  2. Select AI Studio from the left-hand navigation.

  3. Select the Skills tab.

  4. Choose your task from the remaining sections in this article.

How to get to the Skills Library in Datagrid.

Browse the Skills Library

You have a library of over 40 skills covering common construction workflows, such as RFI management and daily log reporting.

  1. Use the search bar to find a skill by name, or use Filter and Sort to narrow the list by author, category, or shared/private/built-in status.

  2. Select a skill to view its instructions and the About panel, which shows its name, author, category, and shared/private/built-in status.

Use a Skill in a Conversation

  1. Open a chat with an agent, or start a new one.

  2. Type your request as you normally would. The agent can automatically use a relevant skill to help complete it.

  3. Optional: To manually point the agent to a specific skill, type the skill's slash key (for example, /rfi-management) followed by your request.

    • You can copy a skill's slash key from its About panel or from the ⋯ menu on the skill.

Invoking multiple skills

The agent can use more than one skill on a request when several are relevant. Slash-invoking a skill guarantees that one is used; it does not stop others from being added if they also fit.

Create a New Skill

  1. Select New Skill.

  2. Describe what you want the skill to do, or select Upload from a file to generate a skill from a document, such as an SOP.

  3. Review the skill as it's generated. Select Regenerate if you want a different result.

  4. Select Save skill to add it to your library as a draft, which you can continue to edit. New skills are private to you by default.

Clone a Skill

  1. Select the skill you want your own editable copy of, built-in or otherwise.

  2. Select the ⋯ menu, then select Clone to my skills.

  3. This creates a new custom skill, private to you, with the original skill's content copied over. Edit it like any other custom skill.

Share or Unshare a Custom Skill (Admin)

Only the original author, if they are an admin, can share or unshare a skill.

  1. Click on a skill you authored.

  2. Click on the more ⋯ menu in the top right and select Share with company.

  3. The skill's About panel updates to show Shared, and it becomes available to everyone at your company.

  4. To reverse this, open the ⋯ menu again and select Make private.

Disable a Skill (Admin)

Disabling a skill stops agents from using it, but the skill still appears in everyone's Skills list (if it is a built-in or shared skill). Alternatively, if you want to hide a built-in skill from the list entirely, remove it instead — see 'Remove or Restore a Built-In Skill (Admin)' below.

  1. Select the skill you want to turn off.

  2. In the 'About' panel, click the Enabled toggle to switch it off.

  3. Optional: To turn the skill back on, click the Enabled toggle to turn it back on.

Remove or Restore a Built-In Skill (Admin)

Removing a built-in skill removes it from the main Skills list, and agents can no longer use it. It is not deleted — you can bring it back at any time.

  1. Click on the skill you want to remove for your company.

  2. Click the ⋯ menu and choose Remove for company.

  3. Optional: To see all built-in skills and their current status, select the ⋯ menu from any skill and select Manage skills.

    • In Manage skills, filter by All, default, or customized to find the skill you're looking for.

    • Select Reset next to a customized skill to return it to its shipped default,

    • Or, find a removed skill and select Restore to bring it back. Use Select to apply either action to multiple skills at once.
