What are Concept Columns?

Answer

Concept Columns provide a centralized semantic layer that maps standard financial concepts, such as ‘Forecast to Complete’ or ‘Revised Budget’, to custom budget columns. This mapping ensures budget data translates accurately and consistently in the Capital Planning tool for all projects. For details on how to configure Concept Columns, see Configure Concept Columns.

Key Features

  • Consistent Portfolio Rollups: Portfolio tools like Capital Planning must aggregate financial metrics across multiple projects and companies.

  • Resilience Against Drift and Renaming: Downstream features traditionally bound to column labels or internal IDs break when an admin renames a header, replaces a formula, or updates a budget view. Concept Columns establish a durable contract that remains intact through view and label changes.

  • Map Once, Consume Everywhere: Company admins map a standard concept once in the Company level Admin tool. Downstream tools query the concept directly without requiring separate column-mapping configurations for each tool.

Standard Concepts Available for Mapping

You can map standard or custom budget columns to standard financial concepts, including:

  • Original Budget Amount

  • Revised Budget

  • Job to Date Costs

  • Forecast To Complete

  • Estimated Cost at Completion

  • Projected Costs

  • Revised Budgeted Production Quantities

  • Revised Budgeted Hours

Note: A concept always has an active definition. If a mapped custom budget column is deleted, the concept automatically reverts to its default Procore definition.
